Brand history

Phileas Fogg is perhaps the UK's most characterful snacking brand. Opened by four entrepreneurs in March 1982 as Derwent Valley Foods, in the unlikely location of a portacabin in Consett, the company aimed to provide the first adult premium snacks in the UK, with a brand distinguished by its authenticity and quality. Built around the phrase 'Finest Food from around the World' the team developed an array of appetisingly tasty snacks and this, together with quirky advertising, made Phileas Fogg an icon of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

This early and continued commitment to quality and innovation has helped shape the company's culture and success. The site has now grown into a large factory location with a workforce of approximately 180 full-time employees.

To achieve the ambition of providing a range of snacks that were genuinely new and authentic, every element was explored, from the use of highest quality ingredients to the highest standards of safety, hygiene and quality. For some years the packaging was regarded as the company's most striking form of advertising. Successful and award winning advertising campaigns have, over the years, developed the brand's sense of humour, quirky and innovative reputation – as well as putting Medomsley Road, Consett firmly on the map!

From the outset, Phileas Fogg aimed for the highest standards of quality, investing in the latest technology, to lead the market in terms of packaging, product development and the continued use of the finest ingredients to achieve the required authentic flavours.

In March 1993, Phileas Fogg was acquired by United Biscuits and is now incorporated in our snacks range.
