Parliamentarians given opportunity to see inside manufacturing

 

 A group of MPs and Peers had the chance to see where some of the UK’s most popular and familiar brands were made, including HobNobs, McVities Digestives and Mini Cheddars, on a visit to the McVitie’s factory in Harlesden on 11th June.

The All-Party Parliamentary Food and Drink Manufacturing Group and FDF organised the visit to give parliamentarians a better insight into the food and drink industry, the UK’s largest manufacturing sector. 
  
Although one of the oldest factories in the UK, the site has been at the forefront of innovation with automated bulk handling installed in 1963 and its first fully automated wrapping line in 1983. With 11 lines, and around five hundred employees, McVitie’s Harlesden, manufactures approx.100,000 tonnes a year, making it the largest biscuit factory in Europe.   
  
APPG Chair, John Stevenson MP said: “I’m proud to showcase the food and drink industry to parliamentarians, it is vital that we better understand the UK’s largest manufacturing sector.  The food and drink industry continues to deliver economic growth while playing a full part in public health and reducing its impacts on the environment.”
